Denim Shorts: PrettyLittleThing | Bodysuit: Dorina (coming soon) | Sneakers: Vans | Belt: ASOS | Layered Necklace
Anyone else here have big booty problems? I’m so bottom-heavy for my frame it’s insane, like anything gained ends up right there… genetics? As a result, I have to be mindful of the sizing & fit of most pieces I choose to buy for wear below the waist. My biggest struggle is finding shorts, particularly denim shorts, that don’t ride up or expose any cheeky skin.
In my opinion, I feel like most styles of denim shorts are made to fit [younger] girls with zero hips. As a newly 28 year old with curves, the thought of not being able to participate in the denim shorts movement strictly because of fit is unacceptable. And I’m sure many of us share an equal struggle with the concept of feeling “too old” to sport denim shorts because of the age demographic they’ve been “designed” for.
But that’s why I’m here, friends! I might’ve found a solution to this denim dilemma that makes wearing them as an adult perfectly acceptable.
…
Here’s what you do: make them high-waisted & go for the mom jean fit.
The combo of both makes for a length you feel comfortable with and a fit that doesn’t suffocate. My biggest issue wearing denim shorts in the past was that they were too low-rise, which drew attention to my hips in an unflattering way. High-waist allows for the accentuation of the smaller part of your waist, above the hips. As for the mom jean fit, it’s a looser & more age-appropriate style. If you’re afraid the fit will make you look too wide, then balance it out with a form-fitting top or bodysuit such as I did.
*BTW, you can apply this tip to non-denim shorts as well. Look for styles labeled paperbag, mid-length, & culotte.
I’m in the age demographic denim shorts are made for but I have wide hips as well and they never fit me right either. I don’t have a big butt but they never fit right and end up showing a bit of my butt cheek. Definitely gonna check out the high waisted mom style, it looks very flattering.
I’m dying to find a good pair of jean shorts. Love the length of these!

You look so adorable! What a helpful post. I’m 27 and I don’t feel comfortable with denim shorts that are too short anymore ๐
I love high-waisted. I will have to try these.
Thanks for sharing! I love high-waisted shorts and I’m with you on shorts that don’t crawl up!

So the mom jeans don’t look too great on me but they look fabulous on you. I still wear the short denim shorts but what I’ve learned is that high waist shorts are the key. I hate when you have shorts that are too long and they cut into your thighs when you have thick thighs. At least when they’re high waisted for some reason they don’t look like they’re cutting into your thighs as much since they aren’t not that long.
I love high waist! Great post and ideas!
Love your styles! You are looking stunning. These are best ways to rock with denim shorts. I’m so excited to try these styles. Thanks for sharing.
