I’m very fortunate to be able to live a short distance from NYC to my home state of New Jersey – 50 minutes by ferry, 1 hour by car, or 1.5 hours by train. During the summer months, I spend almost every weekend at the beach just one mile from my house. It’s truly an incredible thing to be able to make such quick trips back & forth, for instance: going into the city for lunch and then making it back home in time for dinner. Not many people get the unique ability to escape the city so easily, and I’m very aware of how blessed I am to be able to do so.
Although summer is over, I still find myself craving a trip back home to get some distance. As much as I love the hustle & bustle of NYC, it can also be very overwhelming to live here. I’m someone who needs a physical break, literally, in order to restore my mind back into a productive place. One of the best ways I can achieve that is by spending time outdoors, in an environment that can’t be found in the city.
…
Where I’m from in NJ is also home to one of my favorite places to get a true escape from the city: Sandy Hook Gateway National Park. But the only time I visit is during the off-season months, where it’s not over-run by tourists visiting for beach access (sorry folks!) There’s something magical about having something so big all to yourself, like 8 miles of continuous beach filled with hidden paths & tons of history. If you wanted to get away to a place where no one could disrupt you, then this is the place to go.
Sitting by the water, taking in the fresh air, and seeing the NYC skyline in the distance gives me comfort. I love knowing I can be back where I need to be in the matter of an hour, while having the pleasure to be able to escape for the time being. Being outside with nature is something I need to maintain that “happy place” where I can be productive in my career & in my personal life.
If you’re someone like me & crave this kind of quick escape, but in a place miles from home, then I invite you to experience the real outdoors. Whether it’s by taking a short road trip to the mountains or a ferry ride to somewhere you’ve never been, taking the time to be by yourself for a short time with nature will do wonders for the mind, body, and soul.

I’m in central NJ and sometimes I feel like even that is a tad bit too city-like for me in the long term! Cities are nice to visit, but I like escaping out to nature whenever I can! :]
